Our Electrical Services in Hamilton

We work across Hamilton 4007 and the surrounding Brisbane suburbs, Ascot renovations one week, a Portside commercial fit-out the next. Licensed, insured, and working the jobs ourselves. You’ll deal with the electrician, not a call centre.

Security Camera Installation

Camera placement decides whether a system works. We plan coverage around entry points, driveways, and the spots most installers miss, then cable it properly so nothing's left exposed. Hikvision systems are installed across Hamilton.

Smoke Alarm Installation

QLD law now requires interconnected photoelectric alarms hardwired to mains, with 10-year lithium as the backup option. Every bedroom needs one. So does each storey, plus the hallways connecting sleeping areas. Installed to AS 3786, certificate issued.

LED Lighting Upgrades

Halogen-to-LED swaps rarely go cleanly. Dimmers leak current and keep LEDs faintly glowing. Colour temperatures get picked wrong and a kitchen ends up looking like a hospital. We plan room by room, spec IC-rated fittings where insulation sits close.

General Electrical Maintenance

Extra power points, tired switches, circuits that keep nuisance-tripping, ceiling fans that never got wired in properly, the small jobs most homes accumulate over ten or fifteen years. We work through a list in one visit. Across Hamilton most days.

Switchboard Upgrades

Older Hamilton homes, especially anything pre-1990, often still run on ceramic fuses or underrated boards that weren't built for ducted AC, induction cooktops, and EV chargers. Upgrading brings the house up to AS/NZS 3000 and stops the overload tripping.

Powerpoint Installation

Double adaptors and extension leads are how most house fires start. Adding proper GPOs, bedside, kitchen benches, and outdoor-rated near the BBQ costs less than people expect and runs on dedicated circuits when the load calls for it.

Tired of Electricians Who Quote Without Looking?

Half the frustration with electrical work is the no-show quote, pricing over the phone, then the number changes on the day. We inspect before quoting, fix the price in writing, and turn up when we said we would. Hamilton callouts, same day where possible.

Trusted Hamilton Electrician

Dawson Electric is family-owned and Brisbane-based, a licensed team working across Hamilton most weeks of the year. Over 40 years of combined experience sit behind the van, which matters more in a suburb like this. Hamilton housing runs from pre-war Queenslanders, riverfront new builds, and the Portside commercial strip, where the work shifts to fit-outs and office boards. One approach doesn’t fit all of them.

We cover residential repairs, commercial work, and the ongoing maintenance schedules most properties quietly need. Every electrician on our team holds a current QLD Electrical Safety Office licence. Insured work. Workmanship guaranteed.

The difference shows up in the small things, knowing which older boards on Racecourse Road tend to fail first, or why a 1950s rewire is never straightforward. That’s the kind of knowledge you only build from working here.

Upgrade to the Latest Smoke Alarms

Queensland’s smoke alarm laws changed on 1 January 2022. Rentals and properties being sold already need to comply. Every other home has until 2027. The gap between “I’ve got alarms” and “I’ve got the right alarms” is where most Hamilton owners sit right now.

What the law actually requires

Every alarm on the property has to be photoelectric and interconnected, one trips, the rest follow. That rules out most of the older battery-only units still sitting in Hamilton ceilings. Bedrooms need their own. So does every storey. Hallways between bedrooms and the rest of the house count too. Hardwired to mains is the default. Ten-year sealed lithium works where ceiling access doesn’t allow it.

Why it matters beyond the legal line

Australia sees over 17,000 house fires a year. Most happen overnight. Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering fires, the common overnight type, far earlier than the older ionisation units still sitting in plenty of Hamilton ceilings.

Where alarms need to go

Every alarm has to be less than 10 years old. The manufacture date is printed on the back of the unit, not the install date. Most homes we inspect have at least one alarm older than the owner realised.

What we do on a Hamilton callout

We assess what’s currently fitted and check manufacture dates before anything comes down. The installation is interconnected to AS 3786, with a certificate of compliance issued on completion. Hardwired where ceiling access allows it. Wireless lithium, where it doesn’t, is common in older Queenslanders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it illegal to just swap a light switch myself if I buy it from the hardware store?
Yes. In Queensland, anything hardwired, light switches included, has to be done by a licensed electrician. That’s under the Electrical Safety Act 2002. The risk isn’t just the fine. If unlicensed work is ever linked to a fault or fire, your home insurance can walk away from the claim. The hardware store sells the part. It doesn’t sell the licence to install it. Swap-outs take us 15 minutes on a Hamilton callout.
Start at your switchboard. If something’s tripped, try resetting it once. If it trips straight back, leave it alone; the switch is doing what it’s meant to do, and resetting won’t fix whatever’s causing it. Have a look at what’s affected. Whole house, or just one or two circuits? That usually tells us where the fault is before we’ve even turned into your street.
Yes, it covers the first part of the job, including diagnosis and a written quote before any work begins. You’re not paying for a phone guess, then a surprise number on the day. If the quote’s approved, the call-out rolls into the total. No-obligation pricing, and you decide where it goes from there.
Almost always a dimmer compatibility issue. LEDs draw a fraction of the power halogens did, and older trailing-edge dimmers don’t regulate that low a load properly; they leak a small current that keeps the LED faintly lit. The fix is either a proper LED-rated dimmer or replacing the drivers. Neutral wiring at the switch also matters. It’s one of the most common call-outs we run across Hamilton.
Moisture getting into an outdoor circuit, usually a weathered power point, a cracked light fitting, or a cable that’s lost its sheath somewhere in the roof or eaves. The safety switch is detecting a leakage to earth, which is exactly what it’s designed to do. Common culprits in Hamilton homes are older outdoor GPOs near the pool or BBQ area, or garden lighting that wasn’t IP-rated when it was installed.
